Affordable Mics for Content Creation

"There's nothing wrong with staying small. You can do big things with a small team." -- Jason Fried, Founder and CEO of Basecamp

Are you looking for high performance tech at a small price? In this post I review two wireless mics that have amazing sound and a desk mounted USB-C mic for podcasts and more. I've used all of these myself and purchased or borrowed them. Let's get started!

Affordable Mics For Podcasting, Video, Interviews and MORE!

1. DJI Dual Wireless Mics

This wireless mic is a top choice if you need to do wireless work outside, inside or dual interviews. I really love the sound it produces and the features really make it worth the $330 price range. But if you don't have that kind of budget, keep reading. I have to tell you about this set but I have a budget friendly alternative.

  • Phone, camera and computer friendly - You can record on multiple platforms as it comes ready to go with lightening, USB-C and 3.5 mm TSR port compatibility.

  • Charge and backup - You can be ready for anything with a 5 hour transmit time and 15 hours with the charging case. It also does a backup recording up to 14 hours so you don't miss anything.

  • Settings and features - You can change many of the settings on the touchscreen directly on the transmitter. It has a hot shoe adapter, magnet and clip connections. It also includes a windscreen for those windy days. This mic can transmits up to 250 meters or 820 feet. That's incredible.

2. Ulanzi J12 Dual Wireless Lavaliere

This is a fantastic alternative to the dji Mics if they are out of your budget. This set only costs $50 and does lack many of the features that the dji has, But if you just need some great sound to get started then this is a smart buy. Thanks to a recommendation from @omareltakrori over at Think Media for the suggestion. I did purchase this and use this mic.

  • Recording Distance - The distance is 65 ft which is still amazing.

  • Features - Noise reduction and dual recording is really good.

  • Charge - mic has a 6-7 hour charge and there are 5 charges per case charge.

  • Attachments - You have to choose between a lightening connector or USB-C.

3. TONOR USB Cardioid Computer Mic Kit with Upgraded Boom Arm/Spider Shock Mount

Tonor mics is a brand I have used at work but this is the first one I've invested in. I chose this particular model because it had all the pieces and parts. It comes with a mount and arm so I could place it on my desk where needed. The sound is great and only costs around $70 for the complete set.

  • Easy Set Up - it took me around 5 minutes to set this up. I had to add a bit of time as my desk has a lip and I had to add some blocking. The shock mount, pop filter and cover take care of any issues with being close to the mic. There are no problems with the desk shaking.

  • Plug and play - It attaches via USB to your computer. No special sound card or driver is needed.

  • Clear Awesome Sound - 192kHz/24Bit Condenser mic with solid metal construction. You will not be disappointed with this sound.

Bonus Tip:

After you get your footage, audio, stills, you need to edit your videos. I like using WeVideo. This video editing app has an easy editor and a full featured editor if you have more experience. It has templates to get you started, green screen, brand management and more. The best part is that it is web based so nothing to install and it moves from device to device. More to come on WeVideo and all of its great features!
